A guide to growing our native trees from seed.
Growing a tree is something that everybody can do. There are a few tried and tested rules to follow but, other than these, all that is required is to collect the fruits (nuts, berries, etc.), extract the seed and to break any dormancy that is present. From then on, tree seed is treated just the same as any other seed – basic requirements of moisture and warmth enable the seed to germinate and grow.
Back in 2002, The Conservation Volunteers produced this booklet as part of a project in Northern Ireland that encouraged people to grow trees from seed.
