National Tree Week is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration and we’re delighted to be out celebrating with you all this week. On Monday 29 November, we joined forces with pupils from Green Lane Primary & Nursery School and the Wombles to get planting and inspire everyone to be a #PlantForOurFuture!
Great Uncle Bulgaria spent the day with children at Green Lane Primary School in south-west London planting five new orchard trees in celebration of National Tree Week – helped by Team Tree Council. As green ambassadors for the UK Government’s #OneStepGreener campaign, The Wombles share our mission to care for our trees and our planet’s future and were recently at COP26 to inspire other like-minded eco-warriors.
As Great Uncle Bulgaria says “If we can all behave like Wombles and commit to individual actions, we can make a huge difference and take the UK one step closer to becoming a greener and more sustainable place to live.”
The trees were planted thanks to our Orchards for School initiative. By the end of this planting season, pupils at more than 2,000 schools will have planted fruit trees, learned and shared new skills and become a Force for Nature. As Sara Lom, our CEO, points out “it has never been more important to plant and protect our trees and it is inspiring to see the commitment and passion of young people for their planet.” We can wait to see these green-hearted pupils go on to grow a better future for our trees!
For the children involved, it was a great opportunity to work alongside The Tree Council and begin planting their new, exciting school orchard. Headteacher Sarah Berlemont said that “the children thoroughly enjoyed the support from The Wombles” and that “it is a privilege to play a role in such an inspirational project as this.”
A big thank you to everyone at Green Lane Primary School and to the Wombles for their support and enthusiasm for National Tree Week! Together, we’re growing a greener future.
