Planting trees for the future

In addition to our regular programme of work, we run projects that support our aims to get more people involved in planting, conserving and caring for trees. We want to encourage them to find out more about their neighbourhood landscape and bring the importance of environment and biodiversity closer to home. We also hope to engender a lasting enthusiasm for trees, their value and the significance of their contribution to our lives.

Our projects

We have initiated many more projects than are currently shown on here since they usually run for a time-limited period, with specific targets and outcomes. We often get the ideas for our projects from our volunteers or our member organisations, though not everything we would like to do attracts funding.

The project’s research findings have been grouped into themes based on the different types of connection investigated. The outputs from these themes are presented in a range of formats, including interactive tools, research summaries and how-to-guides. These can all be explored through the links below.

To mark the anniversary of the Accession and Coronation years, a generation of children have planted a large specimen of their chosen tree in a public place such as a park, on common land or in school grounds. Below you can find links to each of those 60 educational tree planting stories, inspired by the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and carried out by volunteers in communities across the UK.

Marking the Jubilee with a tree was a starting point for narratives that brought together people from across the generations to pass on memories and reflect on the changes that have taken place since 1952, the events that have shaped our country, and the uniting role of Her Majesty.

As many of you know, the terrible impact of Dutch elm disease in the 1970s plays an important role in The Tree Council’s history. The charity was established in 1974 as part of the national replanting effort which inspired the nation to get out and restore our treescapes. So we were delighted when a Tree Warden suggested planting disease-resistent elm trees to commemorate thirty years of tree wardening.

More than 50 orchards, planted across the UK by community groups, schools and volunteer Tree Wardens to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Tree Council, are bringing forth their first golden fruits as the season changes.

To mark half a century since the founding of The Tree Council, in 1974, supporters were offered the opportunity to apply for a special selection of trees that produce specifically golden coloured fruit – in tribute to the traditional association between 50th anniversaries and the gift of gold.
