More than 275 libraries nationwide are hosting gorgeous hedgerow related materials and resources for little ones and big kids alike – with hedge-y bookmarks to take away, activity booklets, and information to help you identify the happy hedgerows in your neighbourhood.
The library spread across the UK getting involved in National Hedgerow Week is spectacular, but what really caught our eye was a library up in the Scottish Highlands and a library all the way down in Cornwall. So we decided to get in touch with the most northerly and southerly libraries and asked them to send over images of their displays and to share with us why they have decided to get involved in National Hedgerow Week.
Located all the way up in Scotland, is Thurso Library, who’s knitting and crochet group kindly donated cuddly hedgehogs for their beautiful display.
“We were keen to take part in National Hedgerow Week as we believe that libraries can play a key role in informing people about the actions we can all take as communities and individuals to preserve the wildlife we love! We are a semi-rural library and hedgerows are a crucial part of our local ecosystem, so we hope to inspire our visitors to take care of them and appreciate the beauty on our own doorstep.” – Thurso Library & Art Gallery

Located all the way down in Cornwall, is Helston Library, who has located their display next to their ‘tree’, to inform visitors about trees and wildlife with their selection of themed books. A hedgehog was made by one of their members and fits in perfectly with their display.
“The theme of National Hedgerow Week seemed to be particularly apt for us being located in Cornwall and serving the Lizard Peninsula, which is one of England’s natural regions and has been designated as a National Character Area by Natural England. The peninsula is known for its geology and for its rare plants and lies within the Cornwall National Landscape, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, also known as a National Landscape. It is important to celebrate our surroundings and raise awareness of the complex systems that exist in harmony with us.” – Helston Library
