SUMMARY:Hedge Planting at Chew Stoke Pumping Station
DESCRIPTION:Join us to plant a new hedgerow in the beautiful Chew Valley countryside! \nChew Stoke Pumping Station was purchased by Bristol Water over 70 years ago and the land has been managed for nature since. Bordering the Mendip Hills\, the area is a fantastic spot for wildlife\, with 13 of the 18 species of bat present in the UK found locally at Chew Valley Lake. \nWe will be planting a new hedgerow bordering the wildflower meadow\, helping to connect up exisiting mature woodland with a new wildlife corridor. This will provide more shelter and food for animals such as insects\, bats and birds.

DESCRIPTION:Help us plant new hedgerow on this site owned by Avon Needs Trees\n\n\n\nAvon Needs Trees purchased Wick Farm with the aim to create Lower Chew Forest; the South West’s largest woodland in a generation. \nMuch of this land will be planted as a forest\, whilst other parts will remain farmed. \nThis winter we will be helping them plant up to 1.4km hedgerow\, much of which was ripped out post-WW11. This will connect up existing hedgerow and extend a vital wildlife corridor. \nIf you have not joined one of our sessions before\, please register as a volunteer by clicking the link at the bottom of the page. \nDirections \nTo reach the site there is a turning off Rankers lane\, just North of Hunstrete. Please be aware that the postcode covers a large area so its best to follow the W3W or Google Maps link above. \nPlease note the toilet facility avaliable will be a compost loo in a shed or tent. \nAbout Hedgerow Heroes \nAt CPRE Avon and Bristol we have an ambition to create/restore 10km hedgerow by CPRE’s centenary year in 2026. Over the last 3 years we have achieved 5.85km of our target\, which wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic work of volunteers. This winter our Hedgerow Heroes project continues to grow bigger and better\, now taking place across the counties of South Gloucestershire\, Bath and North East Somerset\, and North Somerset. \nPlanting and restoring hedgerows can prevent soil erosion\, increase biodiversity by providing wildlife habitat for many species of birds\, insects\, butterflies and small mammals and can increase the overall aesthetic appeal of a landscape. \nWe still need your help! \nRegister as a volunteer to receive details on upcoming activities\, and join us to help improve hedgerows across the South West.
