SUMMARY:Trees & Science with The Carbon Community
DESCRIPTION:Join The Carbon Community for a day of Trees & Citizen Science on Saturday 29th November. \nYou’ll have the opportunity to get involved in research on trees at Glandwr Forest and to visit two of our veteran trees. \nResearch at Glandwr Forest\nLaunched in 2021\, our the Glandwr Forest Carbon Study looks at the impact of two nature-based treatments\, enhanced rock weathering (with crushed basalt) and soil microbiome inoculation\, on newly planted forests. Designed together with leading scientists\, the study looks at tree resilience\, tree growth and whether these treatments can accelerate carbon sequestration above and below the ground. \nCommunity Science\nCitizen science\, sometimes called community science\, is where people can help scientists in their work by taking measurements. \nThis November\, we will be measuring trees in our dose response study\, which looks at the impact of varying levels of enhanced rock weathering (basalt addition) and soil microbiome inoculation on tree growth. \nActivities will include measuring \n\n🌳 Diameter at base\n\n\n🌲 Diameter at 1.3 metres\n\n\n📏 Height\n\n\n📱 Recording the information\n\nWe will work in pairs out in the field. Please note that all activities are physical and on un-even terrain. Activities are suitable for 16+\, under 18s must bring a responsible adult. \nThe Day \n\n9:00 – 9:30 Coffee & tea available in the barn\n\n\n9:30 – 10:15 Safety Briefing & Training on Measurement techniques\n\n\n10:15 – 12:15 Out in the field\, measuring trees\n\n\n12:15 – 13:15 Lunch\n\n\n13:15 – 15:15 Out in the field\, measuring trees\n\n\n15:15 – 15:30 Coffee & Tea at the barn to celebrate\n\nLocation \nAddress is The Carbon Community\, Cynghordy\, Llandovery SA20 0LW. \n\n📍Follow directions to The Carbon Community on Google Maps (not the postcode)\n\n\n📍what3words apply/shelter/wordplay\n\nOnce you reach Cynghordy\, follow the road under the viaduct. We are the first turning on the left over a small green bridge. There are signs for The Glandwr Forest and Penlan at the bridge. The driveway to our site is up a steep hill from the bridge. We are trying to keep the carbon footprint of the project as low as possible\, please consider this in your travel plans. \nWhat to bring \nPlease visit our website for more information on volunteering with The Carbon Community. Our volunteering takes place outdoors\, the grass around the trees is long and can remain wet with rain or morning dew. There are nettles in places. Old clothes are recommended. \n\nSun protection\, wind protection or rain protection depending on the day.\n\n\nWe strongly recommend long trousers\, long-sleeved shirt\, plenty of warm layers\, a pair of dry socks and a hat with a brim.\n\n\nSturdy footwear\, ideally waterproof. Wellies are recommended in wet weather.\n\n\nPlease bring a waterproof jacket\, waterproof trousers and gardening gloves or similar.\n\n\nA rucksack is also useful.\n\n\nIf you normally carry an Epi-pen for severe allergies\, please bring it with you.\n\n\nOur indoor volunteer area is one room which includes the kitchen and an induction hob. If this is a risk to you please let one of the supervisors know so we can make arrangements.\n\nFood & Drinks \n\nPlease bring a water bottle and plenty of water. We have treated spring water on site.\n\n\nThe Carbon Community will provide hot drinks\, snacks and a lunch suitable for vegetarians\, with gluten-free options. If you have additional dietary requirements please bring your own lunch and snacks. Note that our barn is a peanut-free environment.\n\nRegistration is essential\, please follow the event link to register! \nAny questions? Get in touch! info@carboncommunity.org
