A big thank you to all the volunteers from Animal Friends, Ground Control and Network Rail, who joined us this week at St Nicks nature reserve in York.
St Nicks is a charity managing an urban nature reserve in the heart of York. It transformed a former landfill site into a thriving local nature reserve (LNR) and now manages both the LNR and green corridors around the city, working to improve habitat, conserve key species, and ensure local communities have access to high quality green spaces.
Our volunteers supported the team at St Nicks with tree planting to diversify species in the woodland and create habitats for local wildlife, including endangered bat and butterfly species like the white-letter hairtstreak butterfly. The team also got stuck in building new bat boxes, clearing overgrown areas of the site to create new access points to the nature reserve, and establishing new dead hedge zones to support regeneration in the area.
