Join our webinar on biosecurity, plant passporting, and pest management for community tree nurseries.

Join us for an informative webinar focused on biosecurity and plant health practices specifically tailored for community tree nurseries. Led by Carolyn Williamson, Plant Health and Seeds Inspector for South Wales and West at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), this session will provide valuable insights into the importance of maintaining plant health and preventing the spread of pests and diseases.

During the webinar, Carolyn will cover key topics including the registration process with plant health authorities, the principles of plant passporting, and the identification and management of quarantine pests and diseases. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the measures necessary to protect their nurseries, support biosecurity protocols, and contribute to the health of our wider environment.

The talk will include:

 An introduction to the Plant Health Inspectorate

 An explanation about how legislation affects Community Tree Nurseries

 How to register a Tree Nursery with Plant Health

 An explanation about Plant Passporting and it’s cost

 An overview of current quarantine pests and diseases affecting trees

 A discussion about Biosecurity at the Nursery site

We will also be joined by Jackie Shallcross of The Tree Council who will speak to us about their current biosecurity research project. We’re exploring how best to help CTNs (particularly small CTNs) navigate information and rules about potential pests and diseases to see if we can help them to better contribute to improving biosecurity in the country.

This Defra funded project aims to improve biosecurity and awareness and practices in line with the Plant Health Management Standard. It is undertaken in partnership with Fera Science, Coventry university and The Tree Health centre at the Yorkshire Arboretum.

There will be an opportunity to feed into the research, ask questions, and share your experiences and insights, helping to shape practical solutions that support CTNs in enhancing biosecurity measures across the country.

Whether you are a nursery operator, volunteer, or simply interested in plant health, this event will equip you with essential knowledge and practical tips to enhance biosecurity practices within your community nursery. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn and strengthen the resilience of our green spaces.
