The Tree Council was thrilled to join Solihull Tree Wardens to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
The group has come a long way since Tree Warden Jean Law’s diary entry from the 30 January 2000, which said: “To tree meeting in Shirley. About 12 people there. We learnt how we can help with tree preservation. Went on a trip to the woods to see examples”.
Now 25 years later, Solihull Tree Wardens are still going strong, and met in Brueton Park to celebrate their achievements over the last quarter of a century.
The event, organised by the Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, included speeches from Leader, Councillor Karen Grinsell, local authority community engagement officer Jo Williams and representatives from The Tree Council. Everyone was full of praise for the tenacity and dedication of the group, which has helped preserve and maintain trees and woodlands across the area.
Stories were shared of the many trees planted and saved from felling, as well as memories of many, many wheelbarrows of woodchip to maintain the path in Lea Wood.
Outgoing chair, Ian Mills, shared his plans to engage younger generations to ensure Solihull Tree Wardens continue for another 25 years and beyond.
Thank you to Solihull Tree Wardens for everything you have done for your local treescape, and to the council for arranging this celebration. We look forward to seeing what you do next!
